## Job Demands Analysis

Injury prevention starts with hiring individuals who are physically able to accomplish the tasks the job requires. To do that, employers must create job descriptions that accurately describe tasks and essential functions, in a way that meets both the letter and the spirit of ADA and EEOC regulations.

A job demands analysis, also called a job safety analysis, is a thorough ergonomic evaluation that looks at job-specific physical and positional requirements such as:

[![Choose On site physical therapy](https://no-cache.hubspot.com/cta/default/495135/ff7ea4ac-0c29-4980-b0ec-c94a5936e137.png)](https://cta-redirect.hubspot.com/cta/redirect/495135/ff7ea4ac-0c29-4980-b0ec-c94a5936e137)

- Body mechanics
- Repetitive motion
- Standing or sitting positions and duration
- Forces exerted when lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling

It usually takes us a day or two to complete a job demands analysis. You can use the results to:

- Create accurate, ADA- and EEOC-compliant job descriptions
- Identify essential functions that can be used to develop post-offer employment tests [(POET)](https://www.physnet.com/post-offer-employment-testing?hsLang=en)
- Have a baseline on record for that worker, that provides a basis for an accurate treatment plan in the event of a future injury

## Ergonomic Evaluation

We believe that teaching employees the proper way to use their body to accomplish a physical task is crucial when it comes to preventing injuries. It’s not just our philosophy – the value of this kind of job performance education has been proven in many highly-regarded [scientific studies](http://www.iwh.on.ca/sys-reviews/effectiveness-of-pe-interventions).

The first step is an ergonomic evaluation of the worker. Our physical therapist observes the person to see how they do their job. The therapist then makes recommendations about what could be changed to avoid potential problems. These could be modifying the tasks or modifying the way the employee performs the tasks. Recommendations may also include safety training, stretching exercises, body mechanics training, or work station modifications.
